The Well Project 2001-2002
Lighthouse Technology Grant In the fall of 1998, Chris Wings' 3rd/4th-grade class (Swift River) and Ron Berger's 5th/6th-grade class (Shutesbury Elementary, Shutesbury, MA) engaged in a collaborative study of the drinking water in their three towns, funded in part by a Lighthouse Grant from the Massachusetts Department of Education. During the course of this study, students in both classes learned water chemistry, experimental technique, data analysis, and general computer skills. For the project, the two schools had access to an Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometer (ICP-MS) at Hampshire College. This instrument allowed the students to go beyond the normal limits of an elementary school classroom and test for inorganic elements in the water, such as lead, copper, and sodium. Students participated in the collection of the town drinking water, and using programs such as Microsoft Excel completed basic data organization and advanced data analysis. Finally, the students prepared reports that were presented to town boards and citizens. Well Project Web Site - descriptions, our findings, pictures, and more. |
