image source Illustrated Haiku PoemsChris Wings, Classroom Teacher Level: Grade 4 Objective: Students will write and display an illustrated haiku poem. This activity is designed to address the following Massachusetts English Language Arts Standards:
Computer Functions: Students will use hardware and software to scan, manipulate, and insert images in a document. Problem: Teacher presents the following problem: "The principal has requested that the fourth grade create a display of haiku poetry with images for the front entryway. How can we produce a high quality display for the school?" Data Manipulation: Students will examine the number of syllables in sample haiku poems to discover the general pattern of 17 syllables in 3 lines (5-7-5). Results Presentation: Finished product will be a printed page consisting of an image with a related haiku poem superimposed on it. Activities During Computer Use:
Activities Before Computer Use: Write, revise, elaborate, and edit a haiku poem. Activities After Computer Use:
Supporting Activities: Examine sample poems to discover that haikus:
Choose an image for inspiration. Write a sentence about the image. Rewrite the sentence in haiku form. Using dictionary and thesaurus, revise, elaborate, and edit the haiku. Assessment: Finished products will be assessed by the student and teacher using the following score sheet. Minimum acceptable score to be determined by the teacher.
