Illustrated Haiku Poems

Subject Area: English Language Arts

Objective:

Students will write and display an illustrated haiku poem.

This activity is designed to address the following Massachusetts English Language Arts Standards:

  • 14.2 Identify rhyme and rhythm, repetition, similes, and sensory images in poems.

  • 19.10 Write short poems that contain simple sense details.

  • 20.2 Use appropriate language for different audiences (other students, parents) and purposes (letter to a friend, thank you note, invitation).

  • 21.2 Revise writing to improve level of detail after determining what could be added or deleted.

  • 21.3 Improve word choice by using dictionaries.

Computer Functions:

Students will use hardware and software to scan, manipulate, and insert images in a document.

Problem:

Teacher presents the following problem: "The principal has requested that the fourth grade create a display of haiku poetry with images for the front entryway. How can we produce a high quality display for the school?"

Data Manipulation:

Students will examine the number of syllables in sample haiku poems to discover the general pattern of 17 syllables in 3 lines (5-7-5).

Results Presentation:

Finished product will be a printed page consisting of an image with a related haiku poem superimposed on it.

Activities During Computer Use:

  • Word process finished haiku.

  • Scan image and manipulate using Adobe Photoshop.

  • Insert image and poem text in a Microsoft Word document.

Activities Before Computer Use:

Write, revise, elaborate, and edit a haiku poem.

Activities After Computer Use:

  • Students share their finished products with each other.

  • Students create a display of their poems in the front entryway.

Supporting Activities:

Examine sample poems to discover that haikus:

  • Have 17 syllables (5-7-5)

  • Refer to a season

  • Include a sensory image (sight, smell, touch, sound, taste)

  • Focus on nature

  • Use the present tense

  • Include a metaphor

Choose an image for inspiration.

Write a sentence about the image.

Rewrite the sentence in haiku form.

Using dictionary and thesaurus, revise, elaborate, and edit the haiku.

Assessment:

Finished products will be assessed by the student and teacher using the following score sheet. Minimum acceptable score to be determined by the teacher.
