Project Overview
Curriculum Area: Science/English Language Arts
Grade Level: 4
Teachers:
A. Swift River
B. Shutesbury Elementary
Swift River & Shutesbury Technology Coordinator: Carol S. Holzberg, PhD (carolh@anthro.umass.edu)
This Massachusetts standards-driven Science project engages 4th graders in authentic science research to help them become better writers. Students conduct field investigations, compile data, write reports, and produce beautifully crafted illustrated field guides to local geology and ecology.
Studnet work involves substantial reading, research, writing, constructive group critique, revising, and sharing. Technology tools such as word processors, AlphaSmart keyboards, digital cameras, scanners, Internet research, text-to-speech screen readers, word predictors, graphic organizers, and laser printers support curriculum instruction by providing effective tools to conduct scientific research and build stronger writers. The technology also makes it easier for teachers to customize instruction to meet diverse student needs.
